SHADOW GIRL UPDATES
|
Jan. 13 Update: Good News! Shadow Girl is through with her surgeries and is healing nicely AND she has been adopted by a wonderful family! A.D.O.P.T. and Shadow Girl would like to thank the people and organizations who made it possible for Shadow Girl to get the treatment she so desperately needed. To see everyone who has been generous enough to help Shadow Girl, please click here.
Nov. 20 Update: Update on Shadow Girl - GREAT NEWS!!!!
Shadow Girl went on Monday (11/19) for her check up with the surgeon and got wonderful news! Her skin flap surgery has healed nicely now and there is only a small section on her right elbow that needs to heal yet. The surgeon has given Shadow permission to RUN AND PLAY now! Yay! All of her surgeries are complete and she is once again covered with fur (and many scars, but she has fur again)! She looks great! Watch for new pictures of her to come soon - she has grown a lot during this recovery time too! Many thanks to all of you who have supported her in thoughts, prayers, and monetarily during this rough time. We are going to try to get her out to an event soon so some of you can meet this awesome puppy. Watch our website event calendar for notices!
Oct. 31 Update: Shadow Girl had yet another surgery yesterday to close the area on her elbow and belly that had pulled apart. She is doing well, and resting comfortably. She will need to be kept sedated to make sure that she is not too active and cause re-injury to this area. If all goes well, this might end up being her last surgery!! Everyone please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She has been through so much and we just want this to be over for her so she can be a "normal" puppy. Someday when she has healed, we hope you can all meet her at some event. She is a remarkable pup - her spirit has remained strong through it all, and her personality is as bubbly as ever. She is quite the trooper! Many thanks to those who have donated towards her HUGE vet bills already and who are considering yet making a donation - we still have a long ways to go though. We appreciate you all so much, and could not continue to afford to care for her without you.
Our Girl is quite the troublemaker! - Tuesday, Oct. 24:Shadow Girl continues to improve each day, despite a few minor problems here and there. The biggest problem has been keeping her calm and still. She wants to run and play like normal puppies do at this age! :) And she now wants to scratch places like the back of her neck where she has staples and her right elbow where the skin has pulled open. She has pulled the staples loose on the back of her neck several times now scratching with her hind foot. Because of this, she now has to wear baby socks to cover those back toe nails. And because she is so wiggly, she has also pulled apart the bottom line of sutures that run under her belly and up to her elbow. The surgeon has decided to let that section on her belly go ahead and heal open. It will granulize and then they may attempt to do another skin flap surgery later to close it. She does looks SO much better though, and 75% of the area is healing very nicely. To cover her belly and elbow better, we have bought her some baby shirts. She looks SOOOOO cute! Watch for more updates to come over the next few days. And watch for some new pictures too!
Our Girl visits the Surgeon - Monday, Oct. 22: Shadow Girl met with the surgeon today for a recheck. She has two tears - one near her neck where she got a back toenail in it and pulled out a couple staples. They stapled it back shut today though and it will be fine she said. Then she has another under her belly where the skin pulls - near her front leg - when she walks. That one they will have to leave heal open - then they may attempt a 2nd smaller skin flap surgery to cover it later. They won't know for a while yet. Overall though, the surgeon says it looks good. She says it appears that about 75% of the area is healing and will be fine - which is a lot she said based on how big the area was. She will need continued cage rest and close monitoring, plus daily bandage changes at home now. She will need to go in 2x a week for rechecks. It is SO hard to keep her quiet though - she wants to jump and wiggle a lot. Even with the ace (sedative) she at times just gets really restless. Please keep her in your thoughts. Thanks.
More info on our Girl! - Sunday, Oct. 21 Shadow Girl is doing well. The only problem right now is keeping her quiet! =) She wants to run around and play and not rest like the doctor has ordered. Capital Veterinary has released Shadow Girl to the foster care of one of our board members. Shadow Girl looks good (but then her wounds are bandaged.) She has staples and sutures running up her neck where they took skin from and she has a cone on. She is on 3 different meds (pain, antibiotic, and inflammation) and 2 of them need given round the clock every 8 hours. Everything is going smoothly so far (knock on wood). It will be 7-10 days before they know the extent of her healing. If the skin flap heals successfully, then she will not need a 2nd surgery. Please keep our Girl in your thoughts everyone!!
Good news! Shadow Girl was out of surgery and in recovery at 3:17pm today (Monday, Oct. 15). The doctor said it went well, but that she will need to spend 2 nights there. She also mentioned that we just need to wait now and see if the skin takes. If it dies, then we will have to look at another option, but right now - all looks good. Thank you to everyone who has helped to get Shadow Girl where she is now - keep her in your thoughts as we wait to see if the skin takes!
Update 2: Shadow Girl's skin is healing nicely but is tight, causing her body to be slightly curved when she walks. A skin graft will help correct this. She is scheduled for her next surgery this week (10/8/07) to implant a skin expander to help harvest skin for a skin graft. Keep checking our website for updates. Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way with Shadow Girl - even if just through your thoughts!
Update: Shadow Girl is looking a bit better, but is now in desperate need of a skin graft, as her skin is not growing back in a way that will allow her movement in her right forearm, specifically at her shoulder. We're counting on you to help us raise the estimated $3,000 she will need to receive this expensive procedure!
